Day 11 of 12 Days of Freedom: Housing – The Foundation of Safety

Before someone can focus on healing, education, employment, or long-term goals, they need one thing first:
A safe place to call home.
Housing is consistently one of the greatest needs we see among the individuals and families we serve. While every client's situation is unique, stable housing is often the difference between moving forward and remaining trapped in a cycle of crisis.
For many of our clients, returning to family or community housing is not a safe option. Others face financial barriers that make securing housing nearly impossible. For many of the individuals we serve, housing barriers extend beyond income alone. Many clients come from communities where they were never given the opportunity to establish credit in their own name, leaving them with little to no credit history when they begin living independently. Others face the opposite challenge—discovering that family assets, loans, utilities, or other financial obligations were placed in their name without their full understanding, resulting in damaged credit before they ever had the chance to build a financial foundation of their own. These credit challenges can make it even more difficult to qualify for housing, utilities, and other essentials needed to establish a stable home.
Utah's housing market continues to be challenging, rental costs remain high, and affordable housing options are increasingly difficult to find. Waiting lists for housing assistance programs, such as Section 8 Housing, currently stretch in not just months, but even years.
Unfortunately, crises don't wait for housing vouchers.
When someone needs a safe place to stay today, they need a solution today.
That's why housing remains one of Holding Out HELP's most critical services.
Currently, Holding Out HELP operates three properties under its housing program designed to meet a variety of needs:
Independent Living Housing
Our independent living home provides safe housing for up to nine residents while helping them work toward stability, employment, education, and long-term independence. An additional room is reserved for emergency situations when immediate placement is needed.
Family Housing
Our family housing property provides a safe place for up to two single-mother families at a time, allowing parents and children to remain together while building a foundation for the future.
Emergency Housing
Our emergency apartment serves first-time mothers who need immediate support, stability, and a safe environment during a critical transition period.
Today, our family housing and emergency housing programs are operating at capacity. Our independent living home remains nearly full, reflecting the tremendous need that exists throughout our community.
The reality is simple:
There are more people in need of safe housing than there are available places for them to go.
As our organization continues to grow, one of our greatest goals is expanding housing opportunities—particularly small apartments and family housing units, where we consistently see the greatest unmet need.
Because housing is more than a roof overhead.
Housing provides safety.
Housing provides stability.
Housing creates the space necessary for healing.
Housing allows parents to focus on their children.
Housing allows individuals to pursue education and employment.
Housing creates the foundation upon which independence is built.
Every success story begins with someone having a safe place to land.
