Holding Out HELP is a non-governmental agency that was founded in 2008 by a Utah couple who offered their home as a safe house for a family of six who were desiring to leave their polygamist lifestyle and transition into mainstream society. Through this process, they watched a terrified family, uncertain about their future and the outside world, become strong and confident with the skills and resources to live on their own.
The tragedy in this story was realizing the lack of resources available for polygamists desiring to leave their communities. In addition, it was discovered that many families within these groups need access to assistance that those in mainstream society have readily available to them. Because of this relationship and learning experience, this Utah couple felt compelled to make a difference by forming an organization called Holding Out HELP (Helping, Encouraging and Loving Polygamists).
Purpose
HELP strives to provide the necessary resources and guidance within the polygamist communities or for those desiring to leave, so they can transition into independent and self-sufficient living. For those continuing in polygamy, we strive to connect them with resources for marriage, parenting skills, etc. For those leaving polygamy, we strive to provide safe houses, food, clothing, counseling/coaching resources, job training, education and connections to other appropriate resources.
A Note from the Director
Starting a non-profit organization was never in my life plans. A polygamist family changed all that. After being given the opportunity to serve this family, I realized more needed to be done. The needs are many and resources are limited. I learned firsthand how polygamists invest their entire lives for their beliefs, and how devastating it is when it no longer works for them.
It broke my heart to know many of the polygamist groups do not trust outsiders, and rightfully so, and that very few outsiders were willing to help without passing along their criticisms about the lifestyle — a lifestyle polygamists are deeply committed to. I wanted to be a different voice, serving in love without judgment or condemnation, regardless of my own beliefs. I also wanted to surround this organization with others who had similar hearts. HELP is on its way.
